Ipid has a new home

The network activities have increased since the creation of Asia, Southern Africa, and Eastern Africa chapters. Currently each ipid chapter organises an average of three events every year and its membership base has increased to 1,032 people. In the past six months the following events were organised by the network chapters:
Regional chapter updates
Network activities have increased since the creation of Asia, Southern Africa and Eastern Africa chapters. Here are some of the events that have taken place in the last six months.
Ipid Asia Chapter
Seminar on Disinformation, Artificial Intelligence, Crowdsourcing and Social Computing.
This webinar was held on zoom on 27th of November 2020 to discuss issues about disinformation, misinformation, policies and assessment of information security in Asia region.
It hosted Claudia Flores-Saviaga a Fellow at Facebook Research and Ph.D. candidate in the HCI Lab at West Virginia University, and Dr Rafi us Shan the Chief of Cyber Security at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cyber Emergency Response Center (KP-CERC).
Online school for Researchers in ICT4D
This was the first online school organised by ipid. It was held on zoom November 2-4, 2020 with the aim of mentoring postgraduate students and early career researchers in the area of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D).
The school instigated discussions on prospects, conditions and impacts relating to ICT4D in terms of broader social, ethical, cultural as well as economic developments in Asian region. Participants were from Malaysia, Indonesia, Finland, Namibia, USA, United Kingdom, Pakistan and India attended.
The event was co-organised by the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), Tallinn University, Estonia and Namibia University of Science
Ipid Southern Africa Chapter
The Southern Africa chapter is hosted by the School of Computing at University of South Africa (UNISA)
ICT4D symposium: Formulating inspirational research problems
The symposium targeted ICT4D graduate students. It was held on online on 16 March 2021.
Ipid mentor Professor Kentaro Toyama, who is W K Kellogg Professor of Community Information at the University of Michigan School of Information and a fellow of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at MIT was hosted as the guest speaker.
Previous events
The chapter had organised two events other symposia:
The first was a masters and doctoral symposium held online and the second a postgraduate symposium at the Southern African Institute for Computer Scientists and Information Technologists conference at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology .
Ipid Eastern Africa Chapter
The Eastern Africa chapter is hosted by Makerere University. This chapter was inaugurated on 1st October 2020.
Research mentorship seminars
By the end of December 2020, the chapter had organised two research mentorship seminars.
The first seminar was held online on 13th November 2020 and was attended by 25 participants. Students from university of Dodoma and Mbarara university of science and technology were mentored.
The second seminar was held on 18th December 2020 to mentor students from Makerere university.
Outreach activities
This chapter has conducted outreach activities and has been part of the organising committee for M4D2021 – the 7th International Conference on Mobile Communication Technology for Development.
