Media for Transparency and Accountability in Uganda
The media plays an integral role in safeguarding the rule of law and accountability of public institutions. It can function as a central communicator to the population, promoting awareness and education and giving voice to citizens. Unfortunately, many civil society organisations (CSOs) do not have structured and informed ways of dealing with the media to ensure that issues relevant to communities receive consistent and comprehensive coverage.
Challenges to address
The proposed project partners and some of the T&A issues which partners works on are infrequently covered by the media, and when they are reported on, the coverage is not always framed from a human rights perspective, nor is it always accurate, or effective coverage.
Activities
The project will build capacity among journalists and CSOs on how to work with each other. Journalists will receive capacity building in how to better cover T&A issues that are important to communities and CSOs will receive training in how to develop productive and lasting relationships with media and improve the outreach of T&A initiatives.
