First training for the Smart City Transport and Welfare programme

The Smart City Transport and Welfare programme first training phase was held in Kigali, Rwanda between 30 November and 2 December 2021. It gathered 19 participants from the 6 enrolled state agencies: City of Kigali (CoK), Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), Rwanda Environment management Authority (REMA), Rwanda National Police (RNP), Rwanda Transport and Development Authority (RTDA) and Rwanda Utilities Regulator Authority (RURA).

During three days, participants were introduced to the for programme thematic areas: accessible transport, applying ICT in transport services, monitoring of smart cities and planning for green transport.

The training was opened with a presentation by Mikael Salomonsson from the Swedish Institute, presenting SI and their alumni network. Presenters from the Department of Computer and System Sciences (DSV)  and the Swedish Programme for ICT in Developing Regions (SPIDER) of Stockholm University; IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute; Institut für Energie – und Umweltforschung from Germany, Scania Group Sweden, Koucky & Partners – Sweden shared their experiences and knowledge with participants. Participants on their part, presented the change initiatives of their different institutions planned to be implemented next year.

Between now and the next training phase, enrolled institutions will be implementing their change initiatives with the support of other actors in urban planning, digital transport, transport and inclusion; and smart cities planning in general. The second training phase is planned for March 2022 for change initiative follow up and evaluation.
