Strategic IT Support to University of Rwanda

Hands-on trainings, setting up a server to host web-applications that will improve the delivery of information services and a completed security audit to inform University of Rwanda how to improve the protection of both digital assets and data. All of this was accomplished during the third technical team visit to the University of Rwanda.

SPIDER has continued to provide institutional development and technical support as well as coordinating ICT capacity building efforts for the ICT department at University of Rwanda. In April 2022, SPIDER led a team from Stockholm University’s IT department for a work visit to UR. This was the third time a technical team from Sweden visited the university since the programme started in 2019.

The visit provided hands-on training to in IT security, data protection and backup, database management, domain name services management, exchange server management, and user-centred service delivery. The joint team also set up a webserver that will host web-based applications including an intranet portal, a ticketing system and a documentation system. These systems will improve access to information and delivery of ICT services for the entire university.

The team visit included a security audit. The audit has since then informed UR ICT security policy development and improvement of security mechanisms for better protection of the university’s data and digital assets.

All these activities are part of the UR-Sweden Programme for Research, Higher Education and Institutional Advancement, which is the largest and most comprehensive externally funded Institutional Program at the University of Rwanda. The programme is in its fourth phase – a phase that includes 14 research training programmes and five research support programmes.

SPIDER co-ordinates the ICT Infrastructure and Business Solutions sub-programme that aims to develop, deploy and maintain highly sustainable ICT services and innovations that enable conducive teaching, learning and research environment. This sub-programme will be implemented until 2024 with a possibility to extend it.
