Collaboration to capacity build Nigerian ICT regulators

SPIDER and PTS in Abuja for workshop with ICT regulators

SPIDER and PTS holds a training workshop for Nigerian regulators in Abuja, Nigeria the first week of March 2020. The idea for this workshop was sparked after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) participated in the ITP programme ICT Regulation – Policy and practice last year.

This experience made NCC see a need for capacity building that caters for more staff  than the programme can offer. So NCC approached SPIDER to propose that they could host a workshop on current and important topics in ICT Regulation for a larger group of Nigerian regulators. This was made possible through collaboration with NCC, the Swedish embassy in Abuja, Ericsson in Nigeria, PTS and SPIDER.

The workshop is in Abuja 9-12 March with approximately 35 participants. Most of them come from NCC,with additional participants from government bodies and organisations related to regulatory work.

Welcoming notes will be given by the Nigerian Minister of Communication & Digital Economy, the Executive Vice Charirman of NCC and the Swedish Ambassador Carl-Michael Gräns.

The workshop is financed by NCC and held at their premises. Mr Peter Ogundele of Ericsson will  give an industry perspective of ICT regulation, Kerstin Borglin from SPIDER lead project management sessions and Bo Andersson and Fredrik Kapper of PTS hold sessions on the following topics:

  • Broadband development and rural deployment
  • New developments in Spectrum Management and Competition Regulation
  • Pricing and tariff issues
  • Future Regulatory issues, e.g. managing OTT (over-the-top) services

Updates and images from the workshop will be posted on SPIDER’s facebook and twitter accounts.
